The Exhibition wall is located in a lively shopping street and has a complete open wall condition. The installation functions as the facade for the exhibition space as well as providing several functions for both interior and exterior space. The wall consists of displays,
seating/storage units and a pull out table for people to sit down and have a chat or play cards. On the upper part of the wall there are 3 operable windows with reflecting surfaces to let more sunlight enter into the space. The exhibition wall serves the community as a space for discussion and information.
The Residential Wall is located in a quiet hutong with a mostly closed wallcondition. The frame is filled with different functions like, storage, bikeparking, a small kitchen, seating, laundry racks and planters. The existing airconditioning units are integrated in the frame and the windows can be eithercovered with a mesh screen or kept open. This wall activates public activityand social interaction on the street as well as accommodating the practical needs of the residents.
The Storefront wall is located on a main retail street in the Dashilar area with acombined open and closed wall condition. The existing door and window opening are transformed into a shop facade with a food display, selling counter, seating and a place for signage. On each end the frame is filled with drawers which can display the merchandise during the daytime and can be closed off to store the products during the night. The upper part of the frame which cannotbe easily reached by the customers is used to cover up the air-condition unit and to place plants.
The thick wall system not only could be contributed to hutongs, but to more wide and diverse cultures andenvironments. The flexibility of the system could merge more live elements fromall culture. We also expect to see the changes happen in different environments with this incremental fashion system.
