The development of Dashilar hutongs has been an episodic process, with a small gathering of the architectural and programmatic invention along yangmeizhu Byway. The architects propose a series of detail oriented interventions to improve the aesthetic quality of existing architexture and streets while integrating new functional components to improve the quality of life in the interior domestic realm as well as strengthen the community spirit on the exterior.
Most residential facades in the Dashilar area have a very clear division between the pulic and the private domain. The private life takes place behind blind walls with only small window openings closed off with screens complestely invisible from the street. At the same time, there is a lot of social activity in the pulic streets.
In between the private and the pulic life, designers noticed a zone used mostly for storage, bike parking, laundry, house extensions, vegetable gardens and air-condition units. This in between blocked the connection between the interior and the exterior space. The architects are interested in revitalizing this space by organizing the space and introduce new elements.
The existing program elements can be divided into two main categories, the social and the utilitarian. The architects want to integrate both the social and the utilitarian into the new facade interventions.
Additionally, they add new elements to create solar power and charging stations for both the local inhabitants with insufficient facilities at their private home as well as for the visitors who can charge their e-bike or phone while visiting the area or reading about it on the information screens. They also propose extruded windows in some facades to increase the living area of the home behind,to provide more natural lighting and The 3-dimensional facade is a customized design for each site to the inique need of the locals.
